Torquay

Earlier this year, I got the chance to go to Torquay for work. It was my first trip to Devon, so I was super excited as it had been at the top of my ‘counties to-do-list’ for a long time.

Part of the English Riviera, Torquay with its faded seaside glamour, once-grand hotels, palm trees and beautiful beach evokes Riviera-like qualities. However, today the seaside town is rundown, especially the town centre, and a shabbier version of what I imagine it once was.

I would have liked to have seen it in its heyday. The bay is beautiful, curving around in a horse-shoe shape and the hotels on the seafront offer splendid views, and in a bygone era I imagine it would have been quite spectacular.

As it is though, Torquay is a fascinating place and I had a great time there – the people were friendly, the sun was shining, the food was great and there was plenty to see and do. I only wish I had more time to really explore the town and discover all that it has to offer.
