Wells

England's smallest city boasts a spectacular cathedral, an old Bishop's Palace, a picturesque medieval close and a series of wells.

Poitiers

With its ancient churches, numerous bookstores and tempting food shops, Poitiers is one of my favourite French cities. Its medieval centre is a maze of winding streets filled with charming timber-clad buildings.

Lisbon: Belém

With two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a palace, a museum and a café famous for its pastel de nata, the western suburb of Belém is well worth visiting.

Hue: Day 1

Vietnam's fascinating old imperial capital is home to an enormous, faded citadel and the delightfully-named Perfume River.

Tokyo

A relaxing culture-filled day exploring the fast-paced megacity's Imperial Palace East Gardens and the Tokyo National Museum.

Kyoto

Thanks to its imperial palaces, picturesque temples, traditional tea houses and scenic gardens, the old Japanese capital is not to be missed.

Nara

Japan's ancient capital is memorable for two things – its abundance of beautiful temples and the deer that roam Nara Park.

Linlithgow Palace

The birth place of Mary, Queen of Scots, is now a ruined shell filled with nooks and crannies, and makes for a great half-day trip from Edinburgh.
